About Casey Williams

After graduating Athol High School in 1993,  Casey studied art briefly at UMass Amherst
before moving to Boston in 1997 to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where
she earned a Diploma of Studio Arts in 2002. After 13 years of living and working in
Jamaica Plain, she returned to Athol, and continues to pursue her career as a painter and
DJ. She now paints decorative town maps of certain pockets of Massachusetts. The
Quabbin area where she now lives, and the Turners Falls, Northampton, and JP/Rozzie
areas where there are stores who carry her work.

Artist Statement

There’s no intentional theme or meaning woven into my paintings. I work intuitively. To
me, they are decorative objects. I have always been attracted to pattern, bold shapes, and
flat color fields.

I tend to begin with fields of chaotic markings, and then go in with clean layers or detailed
patterns on top, or vice versa. I like interplay between messy and perfect.

My process is a lot like coloring, which not only relaxes me, but takes me back to my
childhood, when I held coloring books in my lap. It’s methodical, formulaic, and satisfying
to me, to hold something flat and color it in…fill in between the lines.

The behavior of the materials: the paint, the wood, the graphite, water, and brush
bristles…is what keeps me engaged in my work. I learn from how they dry, crack, pool,
absorb or bleed and I carry what I find into the next piece or series.

I find inspiration from the things around me everyday everywhere. Patterns on a rusted
door, a friends earring, a scene from a film, a feeling or style in someone’s home, dreams,
remembering dishes, clothing, or pillows from a relative’s house party in 1979, or a towel in
my grandmother’s bathroom; They all spark ideas and mix together in my mind to
produce works ranging from large abstract paintings to smaller hand-made decorative
