About Joni Lohr

My love of photography came from my dad. He was always taking photos of family events, and I had to do the same. I started with a Kodak Brownie camera and eventually graduated to an instamatic. The photos weren’t great technically, but I had memories that I could look at over and over again.

In my early 20’s, a friend gave me a Yashica-Mat Twin Lens Reflex camera. I had no idea what I was doing, but went to a local park and took pictures of trees, the terrain, and two young boys who were playing there. I loved the clarity of the photos, discovered I had an eye for composition, and fell in love with capturing the world around me, especially the people. Fifty years later, I’m still indulging that passion, although with more sophisticated equipment.

My most recent obsession is photographing abandoned buildings. Returning to visit family in Detroit where I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, I see the ghosts and remnants of the powerful factories and dense, lively neighborhoods of my childhood. It has made me contemplate, in the world and in my own life as I get older, what remains and what is lost. There is a spirit that remains in these places and these objects, magic totems that resist the rust and rot of their circumstances. Everywhere I travel, I look for lost buildings to save in photographs.

My work has been exhibited at the Morini Gallery, the Charles Fine Arts Gallery, JP Open Studios’ Art Projections (Juror’s Choice Award), Unlimited Sotheby’s International Jamaica Plain, Menino Art Center, TILL Wave Gallery, Gallery 160, and Fusco & Four Modern.

About David Dauer

This group of paintings at Sotheby’s begins with free-flowing drawings with some topic in mind at a subconscious level, which evolves into a dialogue of the human experience. Lately religious and political events have become quite evident. Fish usually inhabit my canvases. I’ve come to realize that they, in many cases, are my personal eyes on the events.

As a youth I would go to the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) and sit for countless hours looking at Paul Gauguin’s “Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?” This one painting had a profound affect on me. Others who helped shape me were Morris Louis, Stuart Davis, and Milton Avery.

With all the lessons of my past I am intent on being my own person and not influenced by the trends of today or even yesterday. My old professor/mentor, Edward Togneri (UMass Dartmouth) always told me to follow my heart and let the SELF come out in my work.

COLOR, COLOR, COLOR. STORY, STORY, STORY.

Truth in myself.

Hopefully these paintings show this and will be a stepping-stone for my future work.

About C.J. Lori
Lori02_Leaving_Dennis_at_Dusk[1]

C.J. Lori is an oil painter living in Brookline, Massachusetts. Her work reflects her interest in literature, anthropology and psychology, as well as an abiding fascination with the natural world. Often called “Neo-surrealism” or “magic realism,” Ms. Lori’s paintings explore the complex relationship between humanity and the environment. She exaggerates or distorts color, form and composition to emphasize sensations that are often contradictory: clarity and mystery, excitement and sorrow, beauty and decay.

Ms. Lori’s artwork has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout New England, and in New York and Chicago. She had a solo exhibition, C. J. Lori: Come Fly With Me, in June, 2017 at Galatea Fine Art in Boston. Her work has been shown at the Danforth Museum in Framingham in OFF THE WALL, Community of Artists, and Figure, Fantasy and Illusion, Selections from the Arthur S. Goldberg Collection. In 2007, she won first prize in Paint!, a national exhibition juried by artist Gerry Bergstein at the South Shore Arts Center.

Committed to art activism, Ms. Lori served in 1997 as First Vice-President of the National Women’s Caucus for Art, and for several years as President of the Boston Chapter. Ms. Lori is represented by Galatea Fine Art in Boston and 13 Forest Gallery in Arlington. Her other interests include reading (especially Henry James), traveling, watching professional football, and walking her dog.

About Andrea Potter
AndreaPotter3[1]
I am a local artist who paints and draws using a variety of media, including gouache, acrylics and oil pastels. I tend to favor landscapes populated with human elements and artifacts. Lately I have been exploring nocturnal scenes. I’ve found oil pastels to be a perfect medium for rendering this elusive and mysterious time—allowing for sources of light (both on and off paper) to coexist with objects and figures residing in deep blue and green shadow. I also find oil pastels to constitute an interesting marriage of drawing and painting. I happily share studio space in Hyde Park with two other artists.
