Hidden Gem: America’s Oldest Car Collection

museum5-300x294The Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline is home to America’s oldest car collection. The museum was the idea of Larz and Isabel Anderson, a wealthy Brookline couple who embarked on a life of political service and philanthropy. In the late 1890s the Andersons would open the doors to their carriage house in Brookline to share their collection of American and European vehicles with the public.

The first vehicle the Andersons purchased was an 1899 Winton 4-hp Runabout. This vehicle is still on permanent display in the Museum. The Andersons purchased an automobile almost every year, acquiring a total of 32 brand new cars during their lives. Fourteen of these vehicles and many of the Andersons original horse drawn carriages are on display as part of the permanent collection.

The carriage house where the Museum is located LA car collectionwas constructed in 1888. It was inspired by the Chateau de Chaumont-Sur-Loire in France and designed by Edmund M. Wheelwright, a well-known Boston Architect. Today the Carriage House is on the National Register of Historic Places. A visit to the Museum not only includes the vehicles on display but the historic Carriage House as well as the beautifully landscaped grounds.

About Life in Brookline

As close as Brookline is to Boston, it has managed to maintain its own identity. Brookline features a mixture of urban and suburban living, upscale shops and recreational parks, apartment buildings and large estates. Along with offering both a city atmosphere and a feeling of being in the country, there is a wide mix of people in Brookline. It is also the home of many academic and scientific professionals who work at the nearby medical centers in Boston. Brookline has an overnight on-street parking ban which is unusual for such a dense area.

Among its many unusual resources, Brookline has its own working farm (with farm stand), the oldest country club in the nation, a town golf course, a park on a hillside overlooking Boston with an open-air skating rink and transportation museum, as well as numerous neighborhood parks and playgrounds scattered throughout the town. Its major retail centers, including Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village, Washington Square, Cleveland Circle and the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center, are pedestrian-oriented shopping areas with a variety of stores, restaurants and malls.

LEARN: Residential Real Estate for the Small, Start-up Investor

Owner and agent, Chuck Silverston, will be teaching a class about residential real estate for start-up investors on Tuesday, May 2nd at Brookline High School from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Register Here.

Real estate remains one of the best investments yielding relatively high returns for relatively low risks, and in the current market, rental housing is in high demand and low supply. Today in Brookline’s Coolidge Corner, a one bedroom condominium unit rents for $1,950 to $2,600 per month, and sometimes even more. Selling prices for such units are in the range of $425,000 to $525,000, and the cash-on-cash return on such an investment can be about four to five percent per year and much higher than a CD, or other investments. In this course, we will review financial and economic factors that have resulted in current market conditions and discuss advantages of investing in small condominium units in select locations. We will use real examples and demonstrate basic cash flow analysis methods. Students will learn basic topics like capitalization rate, cash on cash return, and why real estate is a smart investment.

norod_industrial Artist Statement

The brain is an analogue machine collecting dirt and breeding malfunction. These symptoms of the ‘glitch in the machine’ are often a substrate for my compositions. Developed from a tactile process my work is parallel to the complex studies of the human mind. Neuroscience, psychology, and perception disorders are strong influences for me. My work is inspired by the brains power to perceive reality differently from person to person.

Layers of research, personal experience, and sophistication with materials build up into paintings that join the Artist, the materials, the visual result and the Audience into a scene of shared perception.

A meaning, an idea, an understanding are incessant.
