Hidden Gem: Crypt in the Old North Church

Just in time for Halloween, check out the crypt at the Old North Church!

Locals and tourists alike have often popped in to visit the Old North Church for it’s historical significance during the Revolutionary War but most don’t know about its creepy crypt just below the surface.

The church was not given land to bury their dead near to the church so in 1732 they began burying their dead in the basement on the church and continued to do so until 1853 when the fear of disease spreading from the dead became too great.

“The largest tomb is the “Strangers” tomb, which holds over forty-five children and adults who died of smallpox in 1813. There’s also a plot that holds British soldiers killed in the battle of Bunker Hill”, according to Atlas Obscura.

The Old North Church offers a “Behind the Scenes” tour which lets you the bell ringing chamber as well as the crypt. To learn more about the tours offered visit their website here.
